Complete and total utter madness from the “Show
Me” State (Missouri) better now to label them: “We’ll Show You” with
this arrogant and crazy gun provision as reported on here from Business Insider with this headline:
“Republican-led legislature
in Missouri rejected ban on children carrying guns in public without
supervision”
In a country plagued
with continuous mass shootings and fatal gun violence, fear
about children's access to handguns and other firearms is ongoing.
Across the country, firearms are marketed to children despite gun violence
being the leading cause of death for kids due to
lax restrictions and laws.
· MO’s legislature voted down a proposed ban on
minors carrying firearms in public.
· Republicans saw the rejected measure as a breach
of the right to bear arms.
· The rejected amendment was part of a larger
effort by lawmakers to increase public safety in the state.
The Republican-led legislature in MO voted down a provision
that would ban minors from carrying guns in public without adult supervision
earlier this week in a state that already has some of
the weakest gun laws in the country.
The amendment was initially part of a bipartisan effort to pass legislation to increase
public safety in MO. The legislative body rejected the proposal by 104 to 39
votes. “Open carry” of guns is legal in MO and may other states.
In 2017, MO “eliminated
the requirement for a concealed carry permit,” according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.
In the state, there is no
minimum age required to carry a firearm.
Democratic Rep. Donna Baringer for the city of St. Louis was
disappointed by the outcome as she told the Associated Press: “Law enforcement in my district
supports the ban of children openly carrying firearms so that 14-year-olds
walking down the middle of the street in the city of St. Louis carrying AR-15s.
Now they have been emboldened, and they are walking around with them. Until
they actually brandish them and brandish them with intent, our police officers'
hands are handcuffed.
(My insert): This utter insanity from the Republicans like Rep.
Tony Lovasco who told the AP that they saw the rejected measure as a breach of
the right to bear arms and he added: “While it may be intuitive that a
14-year-old has no legitimate purpose, it doesn't actually mean that they're
going to harm someone. We don't know that yet. Generally speaking, we don't
charge people with crimes because we think they're going to hurt someone.”
Only one Republican, Rep. Bill Allen, voted in favor of the
measure.
My 2 Cents: As I have said
for years that I support the right to bear arms as stated in 2nd
Amendment of our Constitution, but I also stand for rational, logical common
sense gun control and safety.
This MO teen “Open Carry”
provision is, and I’ll say it again, utter madness. Gun-related/shooting deaths
in recent years has wildly grown as seen here and also here.
I am sure the forefathers
did not intend for teens to be able to openly “bear” arms in public without a
permit and certainly without adult supervision of some kind. Who honestly can
doubt that?
I am shocked that a state,
any state like this in MO would pass a law or allow this. As we all know teen
years are stressful and anger is not always under control – image a scene were a
few angry teens face off with AR-15’s – madness, utter madness – shame on
Missouri legislators for their reckless provision of the law like this.
Thanks for stopping by.
