Major breaking news on
the mess in Afghanistan with this headline from Business
Insider:
“Afghan President Ashraf Ghani flees
Afghanistan for Tajikistan as Taliban fighters enter Kabul”
· Ghani has gone into exile.
· Ghani and his team have left Afghanistan for
Tajikistan.
· The Taliban has entered Kabul and they expect to
assume formal administrative control within hours.
Afghanistan President Ashraf Ghani fled Kabul earlier Sunday
(August 15) as Taliban insurgents moved into further parts of the country and starting
entering the Capitol (according to the AP).
President Joe Biden meanwhile has held firm on his plan to withdraw the U.S. Military from Afghanistan, bringing an end to the country's two-decade effort in the country.
Biden on Saturday (August 14) ordered an additional 5,000
troops to Afghanistan to facilitate the “orderly and safe drawdown of US
personnel and other allied personnel and an orderly and safe evacuation of
Afghans who helped our troops during our mission and those at special risk from
the Taliban advance.”
Biden said
in a statement: “One more year, or five more years, of U.S. military presence
would not have made a difference if the Afghan military cannot or will not hold
its own country. And an endless American presence in the middle of another
country's civil conflict was not acceptable to me.”
My 2 Cents: I totally agree with Biden – if that country can’t defend itself, then no amount of American blood, sweat, tears, or money will do it for them.
Twenty-years of our entanglement there is enough.
If they can’t or won’t hold their own – then as
President Biden says, we can’t do it for them, period.
