Where is the old GOP? This “new” GOP is getting a lot
headlines lately, but most of it is pretty damn scary.
For example: Earlier
this year, a poll conducted by the American Enterprise Institute (AEI) showed
that a sizable portion of Republican voters said they would be open to
supporting political violence.
That survey found
that 39% of GOP voters agreed with the statement: “If elected leaders will
not protect America, the people must do it themselves, even if it requires
violent actions.”
The results of those polls came just after Trump's
supporters attacked the U.S. Capitol on January 6 in an ultimately unsuccessful
effort to overturn the 2020 election victory, and as they shouted: “Hang Mike
Pence.”
They openly threatened VP Pence and other lawmakers (e.g., Speaker
Pelosi) as they ran through the Capitol searching for them. They were incited by
Trump's many groundless claims that the 2020 election was “rigged or stolen” by
Democrats.
Many rioters wore QAnon clothing and carried banners espousing QAnon beliefs here from the BBC: “The government, media, and financial worlds in the U.S. are controlled by a group of Satan-worshipping pedophiles who run a global child sex trafficking operation.”
That also helped drive the January 6 insurrection.
This quote from Jelani Cobb in the Atlantic
kind of sums it up: “The Democratic and the Republican Parties have endured as
long as they have because they have significantly altered their identities to
remain viable; in a sense, each has come to represent what it once reviled.”

My 2 cents: Not much to
add to this – but as readers know and I’m sure many do – this is scary stuff
now coming from this “new, solely-owned Trump” GOP.
It’s not hard to see that but very hard for many of them to deny. But, as we see more key and front line Republicans staying close Trump out fear about losing more in 2022 and then again in 2024, the truth cannot be denied: Trump owns them right now lock, stock, and barrel.
If
they speak out against him, he will sic the GOP base on them and they lose more power. I am simply stating the obvious, right? I think so.
Thanks for stopping.
