Short intro to this post from the NY TIMES:
WASHINGTON — In GA, AZ, and a few other states won by President Joe Biden, some leading Republicans stood up in November to make what, in any other year, would be an unremarkable statement: “The race is over. And we lost, fair and square.”
(I add: So, what has happened
to those level-headed Republicans – they seem to have all disappeared as the
main post below shows).
Main Post: There was a national record of votes cast in 2020, yet
Republicans are distraught about Trump losing and now they will try what they
always do when they lose: Make it harder to vote as this
NY TIMES story and headline tells:
“After Record Turnout,
Republicans Are Trying to Make It Harder to Vote”
More background here
from the Brennan Center for Justice at NYU experts on voting in America.
The GOP also had a record voter
turnout as did the DEMS. All that is very good to great news for our democracy,
but somehow the GOP is not happy that Trump lost following his wild accusations
about the election (even before the first vote was cast that it was rigged).
Now the GOP (via mostly hardcore Conservatives) when they lose do what they
have for decades – tighten the rules for voting to favor themselves.
Now, according to the Brennan
Center for Justice at NYU, many state GOP legislators have filed 106 bills to
tighten election rules making it harder to cast a ballot. That number is triple
the number at this same time last year wherein they did the exact same thing:
Try to make it harder to vote and thus benefit the GOP.
Historical Fact: Republicans have
for more than a decade have used wildly inflated allegations of voter fraud to
justify making it harder to vote. This time they are clinging to Trump’s
thoroughly debunked charges of a stolen, rigged, false election that mostly
will push back in Democratic-leaning districts who flocked to vote and millions
who filed mail-in ballots last year due to the virus restrictions about keeping
a social distance and not having to stand in line for hours to vote.
Example, in GA, their House of
Representatives has set up a special committee on election integrity. GOP
members are pushing a roll back no-excuse absentee voting.
In PA, Republicans plan 14
hearings to revisit complaints they raised last year about the election and to
propose limitations on voting – all that were tossed out by numerous court
decisions.
And, the list continues in other
RED-leaning states, too.
The two links above continue with
important information on this very critical issue.
Thank goodness for these watchful eyes — a very big set of eyes, too:
My 2 cents: Nothing except
to ensure that our elections are fair, safe, secure, and widely used is what
matters … and, not changing the standards after an election that makes it harder,
not easier, to vote just because your side lost. But, that is in the GOP’s DNA.
Quite simply, they know no
other way. Plus, all the while they keep blaming others for any flaws in the
system that cause them to lose – rather than facing the facts: Voters did not
want them in office.
Now, rather than working to make elections more safe and secure and continually fair and balanced, they work hard to make it more difficult to vote.
That is sad, very sad indeed. So, stay
tuned for more updates on this as time goes by.
Thanks for stopping by.
