President Biden statement on the Senate bi-partisan border bill just agreed upon pending a vote next week. Reported on here from Meidas Touch with this their headline:
“Senate Negotiators Reach Bi-Partisan Border Deal that Biden Will Sign”
Notes
from my earlier post here: Senate negotiators have reached an agreement
on a comprehensive, bi-partisan border deal that President Biden has pledged to
sign. The only problem is the House, and the fact that Speaker Johnson seems to
be completely controlled by Trump on this issue saying: “It’s dead on arrival.”
The agreement would give the president the authority to completely shut down the border if crossings reach certain levels, and President Biden's statement said that he would exercise that authority immediately.
The asylum process would also be sped up
so that cases could be processed more quickly, which would also speed up deportations
for migrants who fail to qualify.
Trump has put tremendous pressure on Senate Republicans not to make a deal with Democrats and the White House on the border. That resulted on Minority Leader Mitch McConnell making some candid comments on Wednesday admitting that Trump had intervened, stating “the politics have changed” as a result of Trump's phone calls.
However, McConnell has shown in the past that
when he chooses to oppose Trump's wishes he is usually able to deliver enough
votes to move things through the Senate despite being opposed by the
Trump-aligned group led by Senators Rick Scott (FL), Ted Cruz (TX), and Josh
Hawley (MO).
The House remains the
greater challenge, as Speaker Johnson also acknowledged that Trump has called
him frequently about the border issue urging him not to make any deal. Johnson has
with a razor-thin majority very little control of his own Members.
Interesting points
thus far on the details of the Senate deal put together by Senators Kyrsten Sinema
(I-AZ), James Lankford (R-OK), and Chris Murphy (D-CT) deal would:
(1) Empower U.S to significantly restrict border crossings
if they surge to 5,000 daily average over a week, or 8,500 crossings in a
single day.
(2) The border would be effectively shut down now to
migrants (not fleeing persecution and who are not entering at ports of entry) —
as December saw more than 300K crossings.
(3) The asylum process would be sped up to six months. There
would still be a minimum of 14,000 asylum applications that could be processed
though legal ports of entry while the emergency authorities are in effect, and other
the key points in President Biden’s statement.
The deal could be unveiled as soon as next week when more
details will be unveiled. Pressure will be on Senate GOP as Trump has urged
them to kill deal as he campaigns on migrant surge but as they have called on the
U.S to regain control of border
Related from Gov. Gavin
Newsom (D-CA) on the deal seen here in his statement on MSNBC: “The GOP) don’t want this deal. They
don't want to make this a campaign win for Joe Biden. That says everything you
need to know about the fraud that they are perpetuating on the issue of the
border and this bipartisan Senate deal. These guys are so pathetically weak.”
This related from Trump – the original story continues here:
My 2 Cents: Typical GOP –
seek and complain and blame about the border on the DEMS and namely President
Biden and when handed a good bipartisan bill with lots of fixes what do they
do? They thumb their nose nose and follow Trump’s orders not to accept it. How
pathetic is that? Pretty much 100% and SOP for this MAGA-linked GOP under
Speaker Johnson – a pitiful “leader – worse than ousted Kevin McCarthy.
Thanks for stopping by.
