A hot public issue running amok with few details but lots of
hype as usual reported on here from VOX.com with this headline:
“The gas stove
regulation uproar, explained”
Research shows gas stoves are a public health problem. But if you
like your stove, you can keep it.
When the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) announced
in mid-December it
would consider its first-ever health regulations on gas stoves, it was the
start of what will be a very long journey to any kind of restrictions — one
that will consider public comment, including from the gas industry, in
determining the approach.
The debate blew up this week, though, when Bloomberg
reported the CPSC was considering a
ban.
But, and always a but
right? The agency could pick one of many routes: (1) New performance
standards for range hoods to ensure they are filtering out emissions, (2) a
requirement that stoves be sold with a ducted hood to vent outside, or (3) most
drastically a ban on their import and manufacture.
Richard Trumka Jr., a
CPSC commissioner told
Bloomberg: “Any option
is on the table. One option that is not on the table is forcing
people to replace existing stoves. The commission’s regulations would only
apply to new
products.”
Nevertheless, the announcement triggered a backlash just refer to the above article or
with a simple Google on-line search with these three words: “Gas Stove Issue” –
you will find a lot of Q&A for thought.
My 2 Cents: Again this is an issue that takes off with little if no real
hard facts or evidence to support the raw eye-catching headline.
This excellent counter story from Axios makes my point with this headline: “Right's
new fight: Gas stoves.”
Why try to make it
political – very poor approach I think.
So, my best advice is to check the story sources and each detail, and
then do on-line searches of the same topic, which I admit most people probably
do not.
Most people probably trust their one fav place for news and such – then
they run with the story they favor regardless of the facts, or so it seems in
many controversial stories grabbing the headlines like this one.
B/L: No one is taking away your gas stove at least not as hyped recently.
Thanks for stopping by.
