Update: The Giuliani
FBI raid story and the GOP nonsense now boiling over about media story corrections
from The
NY Post here.
The New York Times, the Washington Post, and NBC News all
issued corrections to their initial coverage of Rudy Giuliani following a FBI
raid of his Manhattan
apartment recently.
The NY Times also appended
to their correction: That was regarding a story about the role Giuliani may have played in the 2019 recall
of Ambassador Marie Yovanovitch and whether or not he had received a warning
from the FBI about Russian disinformation.
1. The NY Times’s
correction also included a note attached to the piece that said: “An earlier
version of this article misstated whether Rudolph W. Giuliani received a formal
warning from the FBI about Russian disinformation. Mr. Giuliani did not receive
such a so-called defensive briefing.”
2. The Washington Post’s correction, on a story about prominent Americans being targeted by Russian
disinformation was similar to the NY Times with them saying: “An earlier
version of this story, published Thursday, incorrectly reported that One
America News was warned by the FBI that it was the target of a Russian
influence operation. That version also said the FBI had provided a similar
warning to Rudolph W. Giuliani, which he has since disputed. This version has
been corrected to remove assertions that OAN and Giuliani received the
warnings.”
3. NBC News issued a mea culpa claiming its reporting was based on a source but now a
second source says: “The briefing was only prepared for Giuliani and not
delivered to him, in part over concerns it might complicate the criminal
investigation of Giuliani. As a result, the premise and headline of the article
below have been changed to reflect the corrected information.”
Giuliani seized on the corrections, tweeting demands for the
news organizations to reveal their sources.
My 2 cents: My
earlier post on the raid is posted here (that post follows this update).
Of course the media makes
mistakes in reporting all the time and that includes Fox and other rightwing
media as well.
It happens all the time, but the fact remains that on this issue the evidence taken by the FBI under a valid court search warrant will always determine the legal outcome of case and not what the media reported or did not report, or whether the reporting was fully accurate or not.
All that matters is the evidence and what it means. That
is still to be determined regardless of how the media reported initially or in
any follow-up reporting or corrections — it does not change the FBI evidence collected.
So stay tuned as always –
more will follow I am sure.
Thanks for stopping by.
