Weak State legislators making boiler place laws for
themselves not the whole
ALEC is one of several organizations that
put forth “model legislation for states to use to pass bills” (that is for
them to simply just fill-in the name of their state and take credit for the
bill or bills passed).
So, what has ALEC done and where?
One report is seen below in the video. It is very comprehensive with real
examples, and as before with HBO videos:
A note of caution – may have language that offends some viewers.
A bit dated (from 2014) but still applicable today
Several other organizations that provide research,
data, and even model legislation to legislatures and legislators throughout the
country and they include:
• The National Conference of State Legislatures
(NCSL): A bipartisan and is headquarters in Denver. It was founded in 1975
from several legislative organizations.
• The Council of State Governments (CSG): A bipartisan organization that was founded in 1933 and is
headquarters in Lexington, KY.
• The Progressive Legislative Action Network's
(PLAN): Has a mission is “to pass progressive
legislation in all fifty states by providing coordinated research and strategic
advocacy tools to forward-thinking state legislators” (or so says their mission statement). They are headquartered in NYC
and founded in 2005 with the backing of several unions, activist groups, and
progressive legislators and it is
essentially the anti-ALEC.
• The National Conference of Commissioners on
Uniform State Laws (NCCUSL): Provides
states with non-partisan legislation
that is consistent from state to state. It is headquarters in Chicago and was
founded in 1892.
MAIN FOCUS ON ALEC: “The American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC).” It is billed as a bipartisan membership association for
conservative state lawmakers to advance the “Jeffersonian principles of free markets, limited government, federalism
and individual liberty” (mostly
far-right ideology). It is headquarters in Washington, DC.
ALEC
was founded in 1973 by Paul Weyrich, who also helped found the conservative Heritage
Foundation think tank, the Moral Majority, and the Council for National Policy.
My 2 cents: I hope you enjoyed the rundown in the video – it is both
educational and enlightening.
Thanks for stopping by.
