Iraq Today: New Picture, New Players, Same Results
In the Middle and Possible Long Term Winner
(Where's Einstein when we need him)
Figuring out that chart takes a total of the best minds in history - so, don't even give it a try.
The story with that chart comes from here (Think Progress).
What started as a crackdown against democratic protests three years ago, has become a region-wide conflict that now has
descending back into chaos.
The countries of the region — along with the United States and various non-state actors — all have a hand in creating this moment, as money, fighters, weapons, and a desire to control the Middle East have come together to produce an extremely volatile and terrifying situation.
Standing out among all of this now is the attempts of the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS) — also known as the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) — to establish its own state within the region.
Basics: A proxy war ongoing between Sunni-majority states in the Gulf and Shiite-majority
and its allies ( Syria to name one).
That is why I chose to show above map with
as the “Middle man” as it were. They stand to win a lot for their investment in
money and intelligence and who knows what else in the way of arms and equipment
or advisers, et al. We may never know the depth of their entanglement, but rest
assured, it is there. The only things they do not lose are people and
territory. But the benefits down the road: enormous.
But, hey this a Blog and mostly my opinions and interest in the stories I post and link about.
I am sure you have your own view. So wade and let us know. Be assured this situation reignited in
will get much worse, very ugly, nasty and costly.
Thanks for stopping.
